Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

Up Jack got, and home did trot,
As fast as he could caper;
He went to bed to mend his head
With vinegar and brown paper.

About This Rhyme

First published in 1765 in John Newbery's Mother Goose's Melody. Some historians believe it refers to King Louis XVI (Jack) and Marie Antoinette (Jill) of France, though the rhyme predates the French Revolution. Originally just one verse; the second was added later.
